Rainy days in the office: Why UK summer isn’t all doom and gloom
Summer 2012 might be looking like a washout but it needn’t be all doom and gloom. Believe it or not, the wet weather can have its advantages.
Why not check out our trilogy of reasons why and turn a negative into an opportunity – a bit like during the economic downturn?
1) Every cloud has a silver lining
Big British brand Walkers proved that the old adage ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ really can ring true by refusing to let a wet British summer get them down in 2011.
These ingenious marketers turned a negative into a positive by teaming up with OMD UK and launching a huge campaign with the strap line: ‘Win £10 every day it rains’.
Did it work and boost profits? You bet! So why not make like Britain’s most famous crisps tsars and start getting creative with the climate – starting with a thought shower, perhaps?
We can’t wait to see what you come up with to use the rain to your advantage and give your business that quirky edge. But, in the meantime, read on and discover just exactly how Walkers did it...

2) Driving business indoors isn’t always a bad thing
British film makers haven’t been perturbed by this year’s rainy summer, which could go down as the wettest in history – instead, they’ve been downright celebrating it.
Why? Because the wet weather has helped to drive more and more people indoors and resulted in a significant increase in cinema goers turning out in their droves to see the latest British film offerings, like The Woman in Black, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Iron Lady, for example.

3) Great news for dedicated followers of fashion
There’s a whole new wet weather work wardrobe just waiting to be found – that’s if you haven’t discovered it already after countless weeks sheltering in the likes of Harvey Nicks.
More and more designers are turning their hands to birdcage umbrellas, Victoria Beckham-style raincoats and bang-on-trend Wellington boots – not to mention hats, Macs and all variations of waterproofs... just think Kate Moss at T in the Park and you’ve got the idea.
In fact, some fashionistas are getting so excited about this new style opportunity, that they’re going all Gok on us and dedicating their blogs to ‘soaking up wet weather work looks’.
Take The Fashion Spot UK, for example.
So voila! Three reasons to embrace the British summer already – and let’s face it, you’re less likely to feel bad about working in the office when it’s raining cats and dogs outside.
Now go forth and enjoy!
